Bring your own

Written by Quratul-Ain Bandial Wednesday, 14 April 2010 07:54

Bandar Seri Begawan - To encourage recycling and use of reusable materials, the students of Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan Science College (Maktab Sains) have raised over $300 to buy more recycling bins to place in every classroom in the school.

Over four days, the college's Environmental Club, Project V Club, Entrepreneurial Club and Energy Club set up booths selling food, among other items, to raise money for the bins.
"With more recycling bins around the college, it will be easier for teachers and students to dispose of recyclable materials as it will be easier to access (and use) these bins," said Acting Principal Dk Sarimah Pg Hj Ahmad yesterday at the close of a four-day event to increase environmental responsibility among students and teachers.

The initiative is part of the college's "Bring Your Own" campaign, which promotes the use of reusable bags, containers, plates, cups and other eating utensils to reduce plastic waste.
The school has branded every other Thursday "Bring Your Own" day, when the school canteen will not supply plastic containers and cutlery to students between 11.30am and 2pm, to encourage them to bring reusable items from home.

For those who forget, members of the Environment Club run a booth renting plates, bowls, cups and cutlery to students at 10 cents per set.

Rodziah Hj Abdul Wahab, the head teacher of the Environmental Club, said Maktab Sains is one of the first educational institutions in Brunei to take up this strategy.
"Next semester, we plan to have 'Bring Your Own' day twice a week, and hopefully the canteen will start charging people who opt for plastic containers," she said.
Acting Principal Dk Sarimah said that the green message had been "well received" by teachers and students and, by her observation, a great number have started to bring their own reusable containers.
"I urge the Maktab Sains community to take small steps at a time...
"Let's reduce the amount of trash within the college compound, let's beautify our college, and above all, let us be more responsible towards our own environment."

RESPONSIBILITY is a virtue that students need to acquire, so they can practice the duty not only at schools but also at home in order to be resilient to cope with whatever difficulties come their way, the acting principal of Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan Science College said yesterday.

The acting principal was speaking to The Brunei Times during the opening ceremony of the Sixth Leadership Camp hosted by the college
.

Dk Sarimah Pg Hj Ahmad related how the school initially had more than 300 students who voluntarily chose to take part in the annual event. However, the school could only accommodate about 230 students from 10 schools around the country.

"In previous years, we invited Secondary Three students to take part in the camp. However, because of the increase in the number of students due to SPN21, we can only offer those students (from both years) to join on a first-come, first-served basis."

The acting principal explained the four-day camp comprised a range of activities for students, during which they would test their spiritual, mental and physical endurance as young leaders who account for being the country's "precious jewel".

Students taking part in the exercise will be staying at the college for three nights and four days, and will have the chance to experience and explore life outside a classroom.

"Students should take this opportunity and value it, and show their inner qualities as a citizen who will make their parents, society and country proud," Dk Sarimah said, adding that students should take the camp experience as an initial step to prepare them for future challenges.

She advised the participants to adapt themselves to the "fairly compact schedule", as well as obey rules, mutually respect their peers, learn to be independent and uphold a strong sense of identity.

She added that "bullying, gossiping" and other forms of negative behaviour will not be tolerated.

Regarding the details of the camp, Dk Sarimah explained that students will wake up at 4am to bathe themselves, perform their dawn prayers and participate in the activities in store for them.

She added that students at the camp will have to wash their own dishes and cutlery after every meal.

"I believe all participants will be sure to take this life experience at the camp and use it as a platform to mature themselves and know the real meaning of life," said the acting principal.

The camp was officially opened by Hj Mat Zahri Hj Yusof, Assistant Managing Director at Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah (YSHHB), followed by the students reciting the oath allegiance. The camp will conclude on Monday.

HISTORY
At the beginning of 1995, the policy of the College to accommodate only the students from Maktab Sains in the Sixth Form classes was changed. Students from other schools were taken in. This has brought about healthy competition among the Sixth-formers and there is a noticeable "give and take" attitude among the seniors of the College.
The saga of striving for excellence in every aspect of a student’s life goes on as the college continues to play a vital role in the educational field of Negara Brunei Darussalam.

ACHIEVEMENTS
Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan Science College (Malay: Maktab Sains Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan) is considered as one of the best secondary schools in Brunei Darussalam. Maktab Sains Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan

Maktab Sains Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan started in 1978 to meet the government’s aim to produce students with a good grounding in Science and Mathematics and to make available a pool of students that could be trained to deal with the challenges and requirements of a rapidly developing Brunei and an ever changing world. Citizens with straight A’s in Malay, English, Mathematics, Science and General Paper in their PSR examination are admitted into the school.

Maktab Sains Paduka Seri Begawan is one of the most reputable educational institutions in Negara Brunei Darussalam. Students who are high achievers in the Primary Certificate of Education from throughout the country can enter the college in Form 1 and stay on until they complete the GCE ‘A’ Level Examination. However, in 1995 the policy was changed whereby only students from the Brunei-Muara District are accepted. The school is reputed for its high standard in academic performance and excellent achievement in co-curricular activities.

Foundation

The school was established in Jalan Muara, Negara Brunei Darussalam in 1969 with classes up to Lower Six (First year of the A Level course) in the Malay medium. This led to the opening of its first Upper Sixth Form in 1970. 23rd September 1971 was the hallmark in the history of the school as it was officially opened by Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar Ali Saifuddien and named Maktab Melayu Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan. This was befitting, as the 28th Sultan of Brunei was instrumental in raising the standard of education in Negara Brunei Darussalam.

The concept of integration was implemented in 1974. English medium classes were introduced that year. By 1976, there were both Malay and English classes right up to Form Five.
The changing of the name of the college to Maktab Melayu Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan / Sekolah Sains in 1978 saw the beginning of a revolution in education in Negara Brunei Darussalam. Quality education was no more the prerogative of urban children. High achievers or high calibre students from every corner of the state, however remote, were then and are still selected to enter the college. They were provided with qualified teachers and modern equipment while greater emphasis was given to science and mathematics to prepare them for the GCE ‘O’ Level Examination.

The college was renamed Maktab Sains Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan in 1985 as its status was raised to a College to include the Sixth Form in the English medium.

His Royal Highness, the Crown Prince, Pengiran Muda Makhota Pengiran Muda Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah was enrolled as a student in Secondary One on 27th March 1986.
The first intake of Sixth Form students took place on 26th April 1986. Princess Hajjah Rashidah Bolkiah was among the students enrolled and she and her batch graduated the following year.
Maktab Sains was one of the two schools in the country to be chosen to launch the full day school scheme. In 1990 afternoon tutorial classes, which also provided supervised homework, were held from 2 to 4 o’clock. The following year, the afternoon session was used for enrichment programmes, which proved to be beneficial to all.

New Campus
The Ministry of Education and the principal, Cikgu Hajah Norjum binti Haji Mohd. Yusop decided that the time had come to move the school to a new campus. The College building at Jalan Muara needed renovation. A larger site was also needed to accommodate the growing population of students. The school was moved to Kampung Rimba, Gadong on 3rd February 1994. The present building has all the modern facilities such as well-equipped science, computer and language laboratories.
